If you're installing/repairing/modifying your chemical process piping using ASME B31.3 and 31.5, these standards have some strict QA/QA requirements for who can make the welds to join the piping.  These welders MUST be qualified in accordance with ASME Code, Section IX, “Welding Qualifications.” 

ASME Code, Section IX, Part QW-103.1, states that:

“Each manufacturer or contractor is responsible for the welding done by their organization and shall conduct the tests required in this Section to QUALIFY the welding procedures used in the construction of the weldments built under this Code and the performance of welders and welding operators who apply these procedures.”

The following three (3) steps are an attempt to demonstrate what the welding and welder qualification requirements are, per ASME Section IX:
