Why “EXITING” must be simple (Human Factors 101)

Why EXITS need to be simple

There is sound logic behind these, apparently not so obvious, egress requirements:

IFC, 2018, Chapter 10: Means of Egress,

1010.1.9 Door operations
Except as specifically permitted by this section, egress doors shall be readily openable from the egress side without the use of a key or special knowledge or effort.

 29 CFR 1910.36(d)(1)

Employees must be able to open an exit route door from the inside at all times without keys, tools, or special knowledge.

So when this type of effort is needed to help folks get out of your building, it may be they need some “special knowledge”.  I can hear the conversations when each of those five (5) signs was added, and I will bet my house that the phrase “common sense” was used at least once.  So when this is your egress plan – there is something amiss!
