Car Seal is an Operational Safety Program

One of the biggest failures in many “Car Seal” programs is their improper application. I’m not sure where or how this confusion began, but far too many businesses are using car seals well beyond their intended function. Here is a simple way to look at “car seal” programs and how they differ from “servicing/maintenance” programs (e.g., LOTO).

Car Seals are intended to be an OPERATIONAL CONTROL function. When a device, such as a valve, needs to be maintained in its SAFE POSITION during operating mode, we can apply a car seal to ensure it remains in that position.

When we exit the operational mode and enter into a MAINTENANCE/SERVICING mode, we then utilize LOCKOUT/TAGOUT to secure that safety device in its SAFE POSITION during our servicing and maintenance.

It really is that easy and the line between the operational and maintenance MUST be crystal clear.  However, we must NEVER use car seals when LOTO is necessary, and we must NEVER use LOTO locks or tags in our car seal program.
