Mr. Bryan Haywood,
I thank you for allowing me to visit your treasure chest which is chock full of superb teaching information. It is wonderful. I am very grateful. This site was recommended by Trish Kerin in Process Safety Progress in March 2009, but I was not sure how to enter it.
Thank you for all your efforts to develop this exchange.
We both have a deep respect for Trevor Kletz. On his early visits to the U.S. to the American Institute of Chemical Engineers (in the mid-1980’s), Trevor asked me to teach a two day course with him a few times a year. Initially, the offer scared me, but I accepted and it began a strong relationship that lasted until he passed away. I just taught with him for a few years, but I owe him for enhancing my entire professional life as I am still teaching using many of the techniques Trevor taught me decades ago. I photographed and supplied the three photos of Trevor on the left of the PSP cover tribute last year.
All the BEST in 2015.
Happy New Year!
Tanner Greenwald
I don’t want to take much of your time. I only wanted to say big thank you. I had no idea how much I could pick up from your website. You do an amazing job at reading a standard and placing it in terms that the average person could understand then add a little on top where you think OSHA may fall short. I completely misinterpreted plenty of OSHA standards in my short extent in this safety field. Your website makes me want to read safety topics all day because I can actually read and understand how to implement the newly required knowledge.
Trish Kerin
The website “SAFTENG.net” was described as a valuable asset recently by Trish Kerin, Director of the IChemE Safety Centre in Process Safety Progress. “SAFTENG” is an exchange of vital safety materials. I recently started exploring this site and was very impressed. There are some donated PowerPoint lectures, which appeared professionally prepared and ready to use on various safety topics (as lock or tag out, flammable liquids, personal protective equipment, etc.) There are prepared safety talks ready for presentations on other topics. There is an impressive wealth of photos including informative, shocking, factual, gruesome, and humorous for you to build your own presentations. The site goes well beyond chemical process safety as it has industrial safety, home safety, driver safety, emergency response, RMP, and related topics. The site also offers a “video of the week” a “photo of the week,” incident alerts, and a number of safety-related images. Materials are limited for nonmembers. Membership is required to fully participate in the sharing of excellent safety information. There can be modest membership fees.

Hope you are doing well. I have gained immense knowledge from your site. Your thinking stimulates us to think and do things differently and reflect on what we have done and how we think. At this Christmas season, I wish you and your family a very Merry Christmas and a new year filled with joy, health, and happiness.
My father in law was a writer and he did enormous translation work for the church and his brother was a bishop who told him to put his works on a book. He did that at a very late stage in his life. As I see your information I was thinking why you too not put it into book form as Trevor Kletz did from his ICI experience.
Your ardent follower.

12. Any additional feedback about the course you attended?
The instructor was knowledgeable but didn’t follow his power point presentation and so the class seemed unorganized and difficult to follow.
The instructor was very knowledgeable
The session was good, the content was good, the conference facility was good, the hotel staff lied when we phoned to ask if a swimming pool would be open or at least the area around the pool. T he hotel website stated a hotel shuttle was provided by the hotel to shuttle people from the hotel to the strip and vice-versa. We checked out of the hotel to stay at one with a pool on the strip.
Bryan is an excellent teacher, although the subject matter is not relevant to myself, his knowledge is exceptional. Great job
This was a good course for the very basic level. The information was excellent and accurate and the instructor was great. The only reason I would not be likely to recommend this class to a colleague is that it is almost too basic for anyone who has any PSM knowledge at all.
My reason for not recommending the course is based on the fact that it doesn’t really cover safety aspects that I and my colleagues deal with based on our industry.
Comments from 2017 BWC – Session #1016 Safe Work Permitting Process – Management System
1. What aspect of this session was most useful to you?
• All very informative
• Although not all of the specific permits discussed during the session were not directly applicable for our site, the best practices presented can be helpful in several ways.
• General knowledge
• Good strategies for permit ownership
• Guidelines for when a safe work permit is needed
• How Line Breaking fits in the General Work Permit process.
• How the presenter used six sigma in the permitting process.
• Not much for me in this one
• Potential application at work.
• References
• Six Sigma approach
• The advantage in consolidating all necessary work permits into one form to better see the big safety picture of each task. This system will also consolidate paperwork.
• The discussion regarding a permit management system.
• The insight into best practices for permitting.
• The relationship of the safe work procedure to the Six Sigma process.
• The wide range of potential jobs where a permit would improve overall safety
• Thought this was going to be a different topic
• We often use work permits and presenter brought up good ideas regarding how work permits should be signed when you have multiple outside contractors on site.
2. What new strategy will you incorporate into your workplace or medical practice based on what you learned?
• Adoption of these strategies
• All permits must have a starting and ending time
• Centralized storage/reporting of permits
• Determine jobs in organization that could be improved with a permit
• Investigate combining different permits into a single document.
• Make sure permit process is followed
• Making others responsible for their assigned topics
• Measuring and tracking permits.
• Modify our existing process to align more with Six Sigma.
• More auditing
• One great idea was color coding revisions of permits so it is easy to identify if someone is using an obsolete permit.
• References
• Share information with those who handle this task
• TBD fully
• Update General Work Permit requirements.
• Using safe work permit for contractor work
• Will suggest to safety supervisor that we streamline our safety permits, make them a little easier to read at a glance. Also have all safety permits signed in at one location, as ours currently is signed out at multiple places throughout the plant.
• Work on creating a permitting program, and keep in mind the principles of six sigma.
3. What topics or presenters would you suggest for next year?
• Definitely would like to see Bryan Haywood back again next year!
• Hexavalent Chromium and OSHA General Industry Training Requirements.

For continuous learning purposes, I distribute two articles to our regional PSM Coordinators with the idea they are supposed to distribute them throughout their regions. One article is always the CCPS Beacon and for the last several months I’ve been including one of your articles. I don’t know how many OSHA and State Plan/Consultation request to subscribe you’ve been getting or have, but over the last ~ 1.5 years I know I’ve recommended at least 3 times to our OSHA family that they should become a SAFTENG subscriber.
2016 ASSE SeminarFest

2) “Excellent event. Amazing instructor. It was evident that he was passionate about the subject.”
3) “Instructor very knowledgeable, and engaging. Although I found it more advanced than I probably need, I enjoyed learning from someone obviously so invested in the topic.”
4) “The course was very informative and the presenter very knowledgeable. The presenter did an excellent job of relaying the information.”

Bryan, thank you so very much! I cannot tell you how valuable have been your insights and recommendations in my work with employers. I realize that among my responsibilities is the issuance of citations and monetary penalties; however, my district manager is committed to promoting increased awareness of employee health and safety through outreach and education with the regulated community. His primary goal is the elimination of hazards, rather than fattening government coffers. To that end, he strives to reach reasonable and fair settlements with employers who commit to abatement of unsafe conditions. Your articles provide excellent reference material as good engineering practice that I can pass along to the employers. Thank you for allowing me continuing access to your site.

I worked with Bryan at BFG when he was our Safety Manager. Bryan brought an entirely new way of managing safety when we need it most. He was all about the working employees and what was best for us. We may not have seen eye to eye on every issue, but he always worked with us to get the best solution in place. I learned more about safety and health practices in three years with Brian than in my entire career prior to meeting him. His energy, passion, and enthusiasm is very contagious. I miss working with him and it is always a pleasure to visit with him when he returns to the plant for safety projects. I especially like his training courses.
Brian Chapin
I worked with Bryan to get his views on an upcoming Ammonia Refrigeration Process Safety publication. We spent an entire day going over the work and his input was of excellent value. Bryan understands Process Safety on a deep level and brings a wealth of knowledge concerning best practices to the table. Most impressive to me was that when we wandered into obscure topics that Bryan was not an expert in he made it clear that we were working in opinions and not facts. This is a rare and wonderful attribute in a consultant.

Recently, Bryan performed some PSM related consulting work at one of our power plants. He has also done work for us in the area of confined space and emergency response consulting and training. To say that Bryan has an extensive knowledge of these three topic matters completely undersells him. He has a gift of being able to explain complicated requirements in a way that you can understand. Bryan is “the safety professional’s safety professional.” You can tell that he has a passion for making a difference and that he loves what he does. He has an enthusiasm that is contageous and is a pleasure to be around. If ever asked “should I hire Bryan to perform PSM consulting for me?” my response would be “What are you waiting for?”

Michael Brown
I have had the privilege of working with Bryan Haywood for a couple of years. In that time, I have personally grown as a PSM coordinator by 100%. The facility I work for has developed a greater understanding of PSM. Our PSM program has become more compliant in 1 year than it has in 10 years. I highly recommend Bryan for all your Safety needs.
T.J. Lyons
Few people have the passion and care for the field of safety as Bryan. Having watched his work in the industry for many years and often leaned on his counsel, he is a trusted brother in our trade. The tireless work he does in collecting and posting “Incident Alerts” (and his honest observations) have likely saved many lives. He should be proud of what he does for he is a professional.
David Caudill
Bryan is a true safety professional that provides high quality services at a reasonable rate. I most admire his impeccable integrity and honesty. I am pleased to recommend Bryan to anyone looking for an expert in the safety field.
Ed Hager
Bryan is the most knowledgeable, dedicated and detail oriented Safety Professional I have ever had the pleasure of working with. Safety is not just a job to Bryan, it’s his passion that becomes infectious to everyone who has responsibility for safety in the workplace.
Rick Liston
I have worked with Bryan on implementing a safety management system that uses a score card that measures activities that our plant performs during a month. Some of the activities included audits by staff management, safety contacts by supervisors, hazard spotters by employees, safety equipment inspections, and safety training. The decreases I have seen in incidents by using this process have been very pleasing.
Ryan Lawless
Bryan is one of the best safety professionals I’ve worked with. He is honest, straightforward, and very detail oriented. I have had Bryan audit several facilities over the years and have always received outstanding results. His best practice recommendations are top notch and any follow up questions/issues are answered very quickly. I would recommend Bryan to any organization that is looking to improve its safety culture.
Dale Fannin
Bryan worked for me during the time we were both employed at a Great Lakes Chemical Company plant in Omaha. He led the effort to develop a world class safety program in the factory. I found Bryan to be an extremely high principled individual, with boundless energy and a high level of credibility with wage and management personnel alike. His technical competence in regulatory requirements and implementation of compliance programs remains unmatched by any of my experiences.
Michelle Brogan
Cecil I Walker Machinery Co. hired Bryan Haywood after hearing him speak at a EH&S Conference in Cincinnati, OH on the topic of World Class Safety. Bryan came in-house with vast enthusiasm and knowledge of safety. He educated our employees, from the President to the Branch Managers, the Safety Directors and especially our line supervisors, in the basic concepts of managing a safety process for injury reduction. He did a walk-through inspection, interviewed employees, supplied a detailed report and gave a complete road-map on how to implement a manageable safety process at all levels of the company. I am proud to say that by following the steps in his plan, and making a complete commitment to reducing injuries and creating a World Class Safety culture, our company has reduced our total OSHA Rate by 53% and our Lost Work Days by 77%. Bryan makes himself available to provide support, verbal and documented, in any area that he is needed.
David Sands
Bryan is the best safety consultant in the business. He has two qualities that are invaluable to an organization: expert level knowledge and relationship, as well as a hands on, drive to succeed, floor presence.

I hired Bryan for consulting assistance for improving the safety performance of a manufacturing plant. He was so valuable to improving our safety culture that his consulting assistance increased to nearly full-time for several months. Bryan is passionate about safety, and that comes through in his interactions with management, supervision and hourly workers. He combines superb technical and regulatory knowledge with an ability to interact with all levels of management and line workers. He not only manages for safety, he motivates for safety. He is highly competent, and I regard him as a superb safety professional.
Rob Lindsay
I have seen first hand the level of training that Bryan’s company provides and it is top notch. Bryan’s background is well rounded and makes him an excellent resource not only as a provider of training but as someone that can get your safety program on track or enhance it.
Roy Balerio
Bryan is a very well rounded safety professional with many years of experience. He has a good understanding of the Health & Safety regulations which companies must follow to be in compliance and can explain the regulations in a manner which are easy to understand.
Nick Brueckner
I have hired Bryan on numerous occasions to conduct Process Hazard Analysis within my facilities. As an expert in this field, he has helped my facilities gain great process knowledge around high risk operations and earn great results from structured action plans. I would consider Bryan to be a leader in the safety field and would highly recommend Bryan not only for PHA work, but also for any safety consulting work that your company needs.
Bruce McDowell
I have utilized Bryans capabilities at many operating facilities, including chemical plans, textile mills, refineries, etc….I can say with confidence that Bryan has always made us a better company in terms of managing the H&S risk inherent to our operations. Bryan is a consummate professional in a difficult world where regulations, philosophical orientation, and good safe work habits come together as one. Please feel free to contact me at anytime if you want more of a detailed reference on Bryan and his abilities.

His session are done in an enjoyable manner presenting the information in an interesting way that grabs your attention and gets you the information you need for success. He is one of the good guys in safety today and has the passion that leads to excellence.

What more can be said about Bryan Haywood that has not already been said. I wish I had met him 20 years ago. Imagine what the safety world would be like if we had an additional 500 Bryan Haywood’s. I admire his dedication and passion to make this a safer world.
James Krumholz
I met Bryan over 10 years ago when I hired him to turn around a large poor performing HS&E program in Ohio. As the plant safety manager, Bryan was able to quickly establish himself as subject matter expert and employee advocate for safety. The results were substantial and sustainable. In my career I have never met an individual with the passion to serve and high integrity that Bryan maintains. Two years ago I asked Bryan to consult for me at my food processing plant in Minnesota. Once again, he was able to insert his special knowledge and personal belief system into the facility and achieve remarkable results. I would highly recommend Bryan to anyone in need of HS&E services. You will not be disappointed.
Dan Plant
Bryan’s commitment to safety is total. He provides safety e-zines full of valuable information and links to articles on health & safety incidents at his own cost and runs a website (www.safteng.net) full of excellent resources at a minimal cost to users. His safety experience is vast and I would recommend his services to anyone who wants someone who knows what he’s doing and gives straight answers. Thanks for all your help Bryan and keep up the excellent work!
