I will give these guys this credit… they make great videos for the ammonia refrigeration industry. But as a safety professional, I was appalled at some of their actions and lack of safety while watching two of their videos. This particular video shows two (2) workers removing and replacing an NH3 valve – a clear “line break” task. One of my biggest beef with the entire NH3 refrigeration was that very few ever applied LOTO and the few that did, often did so very poorly. It is known, and I am serious when I say this, as the “red rag program” as workers usually would tie a red shop rag around a valve to indicate its position had been changed – no Lockout or even Tagout, just a red rag. In this video, we see the newer generation’s program and they now use flagging ribbon which we can see at the 7:10 mark in the video. Also, take note of their PPE, or should I say “lack of PPE” for performing a line break on a 1″ LIQUID NH3 line.
But hey, the videography is world-class… (you can skip to the 7:10 mark in the video for the interesting parts)
