Redemption – Clarification on powered-air purifying respirators (PAPR), their assigned protection factor, and Footnote 4

I have been validated!  I have received so many nasty grams from folks regarding my position on the ASSUMED PAPR Assigned Protection Factor of 1,000 which I wrote about in several postings going all the way back to 2015 of which this was my first attempt to educate and warn others of some flawed practices: What is the ACTUAL assigned protection factor for Powered Air Purifying Respirators (PAPR) WITHOUT a tight-fitting facepiece?  I actually had a CIH pull rank on me and told me I should just stick to process safety as he was right and I was wrong.  He even told me, that my article (which someone shared with him) was “dangerous”.  So here is OSHA’s official position on PAPR’s, their APF’s and NOTE 4 in 1910.134…

HINT:  I am not a CIH, but I have stayed at a Holiday Inn Express before.  And it does not hurt to have several really good friends and a couple of former employees who are CIHs!
