Simple Engineering Control to allow failing safely (Gas Pump drive offs)

I share this in my training classes as this is an example that most adults can relate to…

We have all seen pics and videos of humans forgetting to remove the fuel hose from their vehicle and driving off, often creating serious hazards.  But about 20 years ago, a very simple device was invented that allows this human error to “fail safely.”  This simple device is an “ENGINEERING CONTROL” that PROTECTS people and property when this error is made.  For less than $100, this device can save thousands of dollars in damage and injuries.

These incidents are rare, low-frequency events, but the consequence of these events can be significant.  So this simple engineering control has become “code” in most areas within the USA.

2306.7.5.1 Emergency breakaway devices.

Dispenser hoses for Class I and II liquids shall be equipped with a LISTED EMERGENCY BREAKAWAY DEVICE designed to retain liquid on both sides of a breakaway point.

Such devices shall be installed and maintained in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions.

Where hoses are attached to hose-retrieving mechanisms, the emergency breakaway device shall be located between the hose nozzle and the point of attachment of the hose retrieval mechanism to the hose.
