9.5.2 The total aggregate volume of Class I, II, and IIIA flammable liquids in a group of storage cabinets shall NOT exceed the MAXIMUM ALLOWABLE QUANTITY (MAQ) of flammable and combustible liquids per control area based on the occupancy where the cabinets are located.
The number of storage cabinets present in one fire area no longer matters.
Previous editions of NFPA 30 limited the number of cabinets to three (3) within any one (1) fire area, with exceptions for industrial occupancies that allowed for additional storage cabinets if separated by 100′ (30m) or if located in an area provided with automatic sprinkler systems.
This was a recognized flaw in the code in that it was more important to consider the volume limitation of the cabinet rather than the number of cabinets.
