Overfilled propane tank causes evacuations, road closures in Littleton
Fire crews in Littleton responded to a propane leak on Pike Avenue on Friday. The Fire Department said a resident called after hearing a “pop” and a loud roaring sound from a propane tank. Officials confirmed the tank was venting and that gas could be smelled throughout the neighborhood, prompting evacuations from nearby buildings. The Little Police Department also closed multiple streets to traffic.
Crews said the release was caused by the tank being overfilled and by temperature changes. Firefighters were able to transfer the propane to another tank.
Officials noted that, due to staffing shortages, some propane companies may overfill tanks to extend the time between deliveries, which can be dangerous.
