Cars, pickups, dump trucks, delivery vehicles, 18-wheelers as wells as fork trucks and heavy construction equipment all have something in common. OSHA investigated eight worker deaths in New England in 2012 due to backovers and three more involved working on or near vehicles. The count does not include several public sector workers not investigated by OSHA, scores more severely injured in this type of accident or at home injuries. All industries, facilities and employees are exposed to backover hazards whether you work in construction, manufacturing, retail, healthcare, and education and all employees must be trained in recognizing the hazards associated with motor vehicles and other equipment. The material is ready and we can start to spread the word about the “Mirror Check Day” on Tuesday, March 19, 2013 in an effort to raise awareness about preventing Backover type Injuries.
We are looking to have an event similar to the “Electrical Roll-Up” last year including all alliances’ partnerships, VPP and SHARP sites as well as any other organization willing to provide the training. The attachments to this email have enough material needed for an in-house trainer to provide a quality “Toolbox” or “Tailgate” type meeting at their location and at their own pace.
Attached is the flyer for the Braintree Area Office’s – OSHA Region 1 – Cooperative and State Programs – “Mirror Check Day” announcement and tips that can be used to properly adjust mirrors in vehicles and equipment following current industry guidelines. We want to keep this as simple as possible and very similar to a toolbox type training with a mirror adjustment component.
