OSHA Log Summary Posting Reminder

February 1st is just around the corner and this is a reminder for those of you who maintain OSHA 300 Log(s) that it is time to:

  1. Review 2016’s OSHA 300 Log to verify that it contains accurate entries for all recordable injuries and illnesses that occurred during 2016, and make any additions or corrections necessary to ensure its accuracy; AND
  2. Verify that each injury and illness recorded on the 300 Log, including any injuries and illnesses added to the Log following your year-end review, is accurately recorded on a corresponding 301 Incident Report form (or an equivalent form);
  3. Total the columns on the OSHA 300 Log (if you had no recordable cases, enter zeros for each column total); then, on the 300A form…
  4. Enter the calendar year covered, the company’s name, establishment name, establishment address, annual average number of employees covered by the OSHA 300 Log, and the total hours worked by all employees covered by the OSHA 300 Log.
    1. We will then transpose the column total numbers from the 300 Log over to the 300A Summary Form.

After we have verified the accuracy of our Log(s), we then have someone “certify” the 300A.  The person who certifies our 300A can be any of the following:

  1. owner of the company (only if the company is a sole proprietorship or partnership);
  2. officer of the corporation;
  3. the highest ranking company official working at the establishment; or
  4. the immediate supervisor of the highest ranking company official working at the establishment

Once the 300A is properly “certified” we then post the summary no later than February 1 and keep the posting in place until April 30.  We MUST post a copy of the annual summary (300A form) in each establishment in a conspicuous place or places where notices to employees are customarily posted. And we must ensure that the posted annual summary is NOT altered, defaced or covered by other material during the February 1st – April 30th time frame.
