2019 has been a year of coal-fired power plants or me so far! It’s only June and I have spent more than four weeks in these facilities. With that said, I wanted to provide my friends in that industry who operate an SCR some factual information on their Anhydrous Ammonia (NH3) piping and what ANSI K61.1/CGA 2.1 and ASME B31.3 have to say about how this piping is constructed.
ANSI K61.1/CGA 2.1 reference ASME B31.3 and they all state that welding of anhydrous ammonia piping must be done by a welder qualified in accordance with ASME Code, Section IX, “Welding Qualifications”. ASME Code, Section IX, Part QW-103.1, states that…
“Each manufacturer or contractor is responsible for the welding done by their organization and shall conduct the tests required in this Section to QUALIFY the welding procedures used in the construction of the weldments built under this Code and the performance of welders and welding operators who apply these procedures.”
ASME Code, Section IX, Part QW-200.1, states that
“Each manufacturer and contractor shall prepare written Welding Procedure Specifications.”
