Can I do QLFT on a full-face APR?

The short answer is NO, but if we do, there’s a significant catch regarding its protection rating.

Under OSHA standards (29 CFR 1910.134), you are technically allowed to perform a Qualitative Fit Test (QLFT) on a full-face respirator, but doing so limits its Assigned Protection Factor (APF) to 10.

Here is the breakdown of why this matters and when you actually need a Quantitative Fit Test (QNFT) instead.

1. The “10 vs. 50” Rule

  • Qualitative (QLFT): If you pass a qualitative test (the one involving Bitrex, saccharin, or banana oil), OSHA only recognizes the mask as providing the same level of protection as a half-face mask (APF 10).
  • Quantitative (QNFT): To use the full-face respirator at its full potential (APF 50), you must perform a quantitative test using a machine like a PortaCount.

2. When is QLFT acceptable?

You can use QLFT for a full-face mask only if the concentration of the hazard in your workspace is less than 10 times the Permissible Exposure Limit (PEL). If you are in an environment where you actually need the extra protection of a full-face mask (up to 50x the PEL), a qualitative test is legally insufficient.

The logic is simple: A qualitative test only validates that the mask has a “fit factor” of at least 100. However, for a full-face mask to be trusted at an APF of 50, OSHA requires proof of a fit factor of at least 500. Since your taste buds can’t distinguish between a fit factor of 100 and 500, a machine is required to verify that higher level of safety.

Summary Recommendation: If you’re wearing a full-face mask for better eye protection or comfort but the air isn’t that toxic, QLFT is fine. If you’re wearing it because the air is dangerous, get a Quantitative Fit Test.
