This week the EPA released an EXCEL spreadsheet that lists all the “RMP Accidents” that occurred in 2017. I noticed a couple of key items:
- Not sure where they obtained the data, as many of the incidents listed did not rise to the level of a “5-year Accident History” incident, but are shown in this data
- The report does not tell us the chemical involved or the size of the release
- The report does not tell us the equipment where the leak/release occurred or the cause
- There are 95 entries (assuming this means 95 incidents, but since many resulted in almost no type of impact, not sure if it is fair to say we had 95 RMP incidents in 2017
Here is a breakdown of the incidents:
Onsite Deaths – Workers/Contractors = 2 from 2 separate incidents
Onsite Deaths – Public responders = 6 in a single incident @ Perdue Farms (Thinking this is a reporting error – the RMP Database report states this facility has not had any “5-year accidents”)
Onsite Deaths – Public = 0
Injuries – Workers/Contractors = 86 in 48 incidents
Injuries – Public responders = 0
Injuries – Public = 0
Onsite Property Damage = $170,637,100 from 22 incidents
Offsite Deaths = 0
Offsite Hospitalization = 5 from 5 incidents
Offsite – Other Medical Treatments = 74 from 6 incidents
Offsite Evacuated = 7,394 from 11 incidents
Offsite Sheltered in Place = 31,911 from 8 incidents
Offsite Property Damage = $51,200 from 2 incidents
