I’m Going Home… And so are You!

D,

I told you a few weeks ago that I had a poem I wrote about safety and was going to share with you all. Let me give you some quick back ground on how it came about. XXX is working on a program to help motivate our employees into making safety personal to each and everyone salary to hourly, home or at work, and to include our contractors. We are conducting training all through this year until everyone has completed this new training. Anyway, the following is my quick story of how that training affected me and the poem I wrote due to that training.

My quick short story about my 2 days of the “My Safety Journey” training. I was very pleased with how the class was prepared and the contents. The interaction and activities was what I enjoyed and learned from the most. But, what I wanted to share was how the videos affected me on that first day…

I watched the two videos about the men who were lost and how the families are trying to cope later in life and how it affected them at the time of the accidents. Those stories were very hard to watch. Being I am a sensitive person, I could not hold back tears during some parts of the stories. I also was one of those who stood up and read from the blank envelopes on the table. Those kinds of things bring what happens to people and families quite close to home and make you think. Well, after those two videos we watched a video with a song. The song was quite cute, but what I remember most was the people in the video talking about safety and all the signs you saw about how they were going home. In fact, the signs all said, “I’m going home!” I thought about this during that video and made a note in my daytime that said just that, “I’m going home!” Later we were told that we would have home work that night and that the homework was going to be new goals for our personal safety journey. I thought about that saying and thought about the message we are trying to give and decided that just ME going home wasn’t enough and that I should be thinking about all those around me too. So, my goals were put together with the intention of finding a way to help everyone I see in my day go home safe too. While thinking about those goals and thinking about that saying, I wrote the attached poem. I hope that when you read that poem, you will see what impact the safety journey training made on me. At the end of the day on day two when the trainer asked if anyone had any questions I raised my hand and read this poem to the whole room. I think we all left that day on a good note as this poem was the last thing we shared before going home.

I’m Going Home… And so are You!

It’s time to go to work today,

Since I need money to go and play.

We start off the shift with a quick safety talk,

Then on to the work area for the pre-op walk.

As we gather all the tools we need,

The procedure we review and read.

Well now it’s time to start this task,

That my partner and I will finish fast.

Wait… let’s look cause something’s not right,

We better review cause we’re going home tonight.

A simple assessment should do the trick,

One here in the field thorough and quick.

“Oh!” I say, “Don’t you see?”

“We’re doing it wrong! Stop!” I plea.

A step changed here and another one there,

And a different tool here is better I swear.

Now it’s corrected, you’ve shown that you care,

And your partner knows, you’ll always be there.

The job is done, homeward you’re bound,

And happy that everyone is still around.

I’m Glad you saw my point of view,

Cause I’m going home and so are you!

Many thanks to Bob Cornett @ MSHA and his safety sharing group for sharing this with us.
