I have written dozens of articles around these “safety myths”, but Jonathan Zimmerman and I were not selected to present this at ASSP several years ago so I thought I would share it as a series here. These are topics that I still get challenged on in 2024/2025 and often I am unable to convince the client of these facts. Like so many myths, the internet can be our own worst enemy. I would be curious to learn what AI says about these myths.
#1 – It‘s Lockout or Tagout; not Lockout and Tagout
The bottom line, OSHA LOTO standard, nor ANSI ‘s LOTO standard requires a Tagout Tag to accompany a Lockout lock.
Yes, each lock MUST identify who owns the lock, but this does NOT require the DANGER – Do Not Operate Tagout Tag.
Yes, you may choose to use the DANGER tag to show the lock owner; but it is NOT required, as so many want to claim.
