PPE is our LAST LINE of defense, and this means we better have the BEST PPE available and be trained in its care, use, donning/doffing, and limitations. Just because it’s last in the Hierarchy of Controls does not mean we can overlook its significance.
Three Houston Firefighters have been hospitalized after sustaining burns while responding to a fire at an apartment complex earlier today. The incident occurred on Jarmese St, with crews dispatched around 0530. Shortly after their arrival, one of the firefighters made a distress call while conducting search operations within the building. The team faced a critical situation when they became trapped due to a heavy door impeding their exit, leading to the distress call. Their protective gear, including equipment, helmets, and air packs, suffered damage from the intense heat, putting their lives at risk. Fortunately, their colleagues managed to rescue them from the unit, and they were promptly taken to Memorial Hermann Hospital for treatment. The Firefighters sustained significant burns, primarily on their hands, legs, and neck areas, requiring extensive medical attention.
