Two (2) terms (Blind and Blank) that get misused in energy isolation discussions

First, I am as guilty as anyone for using these terms interchangeably, but this week I was in a deep discussion on PRCS Isolation and those on the other end of the phone were getting confused as I was using these terms interchangeably. So I am setting the record straight on this topic, as it is critical I use these terms correctly when discussing Energy Isolation, especially in terms of PRCS Entry and Line/Equipment Opening.

In the context of industrial energy isolation, “blinds” and “blanks” are often used interchangeably in casual conversation, but they represent distinct mechanical methods for ensuring a positive, absolute isolation of piping systems.

Here is the breakdown of the differences and their typical applications.

The fundamental distinction lies in design, installation frequency, and structural integrity.

A blind flange is a solid disk of metal that matches the diameter and bolt pattern of the existing flange system.

  • Application: It is used to cap off the end of a pipe, a valve outlet, or a dead-end branch.
  • Mechanical Integrity: Because it is essentially a full-pressure flange without an opening, it is the most robust form of isolation available. It is designed to handle the full pressure rating of the piping system it is attached to.

A blank is a thin, flat piece of metal—often shaped like a paddle or, in the case of a “spectacle blind,” a figure-eight.

  • Spectacle Blind: This is the industry standard for process safety. One side is open (a ring) to allow flow during operation, and the other side is solid (the blank). It is permanently installed between two flanges. When maintenance is required, you loosen the bolts, rotate the “spectacle,” and place the solid side into the flow path.
  • Slip Blind: A simple, solid plate that is manually inserted between two flanges whenever isolation is required.

Both are considered Positive Isolation. Under OSHA 1910.147 (Lockout/Tagout) and standard industry practices (like those outlined in API RP 1110), these are preferred over valve-only isolation because they provide a physical barrier to the flow of hazardous energy or materials.
