In 2017, following work-related deaths at an ice rink, we utilized the Risk Analysis Unit’s research on ammonia exposure to launch a three-phased province-wide inspection initiative focusing on ammonia exposure to ensure that owners and employers of facilities using ammonia are correctly managing the risks associated with the toxic gas. In late 2017, the first phase of the Ammonia Inspection initiative was launched. A team of 39 prevention officers inspected 206 recreational facilities, including arenas and curling rinks that use ammonia in their refrigeration systems. The inspections focused on exposure control plans, emergency preparedness, and rescue. To ensure a standardized and effective inspection process, Prevention Services developed a job aid and safe work procedures for officers. They also developed an information package and toolkit for employers, which included tools to help employers conduct their risk assessments and develop exposure control and emergency plans. The second phase will commence in 2018, with a focus on contractors performing installations, maintenance, and other activities involving ammonia systems. The third phase will follow and include inspections of other workplaces that use ammonia, such as food processors and storage sites.
