FORKLIFT Man crushed by forklift in Springvale drives for help (a man is in a serious condition after being crushed by a forklift – the man drove himself to his wife’s workplace after being crushed between a forklift and a tray truck – she called an ambulance for him about 1:45 pm and paramedics found he had suffered multiple fractured ribs and suspected internal bleeding – he was treated at his wife’s workplace before being taken to a Hospital in a serious but stable condition)

STEAM Steam power plant incident puts duo in clinic (two workers have been hospitalized after an accident at a steam power facility – the men, aged 51 and 54, were transferred to a clinic after the incident – the colleagues suffered second- and third-degree burns to their upper bodies, arms and legs – they were harmed when steam escaped containers as they maintained various fittings at the plant)

HOTWORK EXPLOSION Worker hurt in tanker truck explosion in Belton (a mechanic was injured after a tanker exploded and sent pieces of the truck flying more than 300 feet – employee was using a welder to repair a tanker when the fumes ignited and caused an explosion – worker was transported to a Medical Center for a broken arm and injuries that didn’t appear to be life-threatening – no other injuries were reported – the trucking company sustained damage to windows and gutters)

HOTWORK Fire Sparks at Lumber Yard in Ogemaw County (a fire caused more than 20,000 dollars worth of damage – flames spread quickly at the lumber yard after welding sparks fell upon sawdust and oil – firefighters were able to quickly control the flames – a board cutting machine, some lumber, and part of a shed were destroyed from the fire)

AMMONIA Workers hitting ammonia line, cause evacuation (construction workers hit an ammonia line, forcing an evacuation and closing roads in the area – Fire Department contained the leak by mid afternoon – one person who was in the immediate vicinity when the leak occurred was taken to the hospital with noncritical injuries – the leak took place at a closed-down storage facility, which developers are demolishing to make way for an apartment development – environmental regulations would have required the previous business or property owner to remove all dangerous chemicals from the site once it went out of service as a refrigeration facility — much as gas station operators are required to empty tanks and lines if they close – “The people doing the work on the old ice house were told all those lines had been cleaned out”)

AMMONIA Ammonia leak forces evacuation in Oceano (a strong chemical odor at a State Parks Department maintenance yard led to an evacuation of the area, but the incident ended without injury – the odor eventually was traced to an abandoned pressurized cylinder containing ammonia – the cylinder measured about two feet in diameter and four or five feet in height, and was one-quarter to one-third full of anhydrous ammonia – state parks workers pulled it off the beach – it’s unknown how the device wound up on the beach or who owns it – GOOD LEVEL A decon photo at Link!)

CHLORINE 30 people hospitalized after chlorine gas leak in Brazilian petrochemical company (chlorine gas leaked from a petrochemical plant has sent 30 people to the hospital – children and elderly are among those hospitalized with difficulty breathing and a burning sensation in the eyes and mouth – plant detected the leak after an incident at its unit – it quickly controlled the leak and denied it was caused by an explosion – those hospitalized were not in serious condition and would remain under observation)

Construction

CARBON MONOXIDE Workers taken to hospital for carbon-monoxide fumes (several construction workers were taken to a Hospital after machinery began to fill an old building with carbon monoxide fumes – work was being done on an old bank building when workers began getting sick from the fumes – a gas powered saw used to cut the floor didn’t have enough ventilation – took about two hours to clear out the fumes after fans were set up and a locksmith was called to open up doors – one person was considered in serious condition)

CRANE Crane operator escapes serious injury at Muskegon’s Torresen Marine (a worker, 38, narrowly escaped serious injury when the crane he was operating on a waterfront barge tipped over, pinning him inside – he was using the crane to lift an estimated 20-foot wood post from the lake near the barge when the crane tipped around 11:30 a.m. – the impact caused oil and other fluids to leak from the crane into lake – a 3-foot steel beam on the barge plunged through the crane’s cabin when it tipped, pinning the worker inside – firefighters, working with other employees, pulled him free from the crane about 45 minutes after the incident – he was taken by ambulance to a hospital with minor injuries, mostly to his legs)

Miscellaneous

FORKLIFT FATALITY Same Incident Story as Above (a 47-year-old farmer died when his forklift truck landed on him during work at his farming estate – no other details)
