INDUSTRIAL LINEMAN FATALITY Storm worker killed by pole (contractor, 65, had been helping restore lines damaged by last week’s storm was killed – he was replacing poles when the accident happened at about 2pm – it is understood he suffered serious head injuries when a telephone pole fell and hit him) FATAL EXPLOSION @ Fireworks Plant One killed in fire accident at cracker unit (worker, 36, was killed when a fire broke out in a Fireworks factory – he was filling pellets in tubes for making fancy crackers, when a spark caused by the friction triggered the fire – he was killed on the spot – one working shed was damaged – decomposition of chemicals could have led to the accident) FATAL HEAVY EQUIPMENT SERVICING Industrial accident victim in San Leandro identified (worker, 48, was killed when a piece of heavy equipment fell on him at a construction and equipment dealership – incident occurred around 9:30 a.m. – a field service technician, he was working under a front-end wheel loader that had been lifted up onto support stands when the equipment slipped and fell onto him) FATAL VALVE MAINTENANCE Worker dies following incident on the job in Sarnia (a worker had been injured when a pin dislodged from a valve that was being dismantled – the pin struck the worker, resulting in a life-threatening injury – worker was taken to hospital and died) TRAIN FATALITY One dead after accident at Republic Steel (a 63-year-old brakeman on a train got trapped between a stationary train and one that was moving on the tracks) GUARDING/LOTO AMPUTATION Plant employee lucky to be alive (the worst part about losing part of his right arm in a horrific industrial accident last week is how it keeps playing over and over in his mind, worker says from his hospital bed where he is recovering from two major surgeries – it was the first day of operations at the long-delayed Hemp Processing plant the worker, 21, was working on a machine known as a hemp grinder – the machine he was assigned that day was the only machine in the plant without a guardrail – “I tried to stop the machine from being clogged. But it was just too late. My fingers were wrapped up inside (it). The thing just picked me up like a rag doll,” he said from his hospital bed – had he not been wearing a hard hat, he’s convinced the machine would have taken his neck and head, too – he was sucked up to his shoulder in seconds) GUARDING AMPUTATION Factory Worker Loses Finger after Accident at Work (a roofing and cladding manufacturer employee, 30, had to have part of his finger amputated after it was crushed by unguarded machinery – the machine worker was operating a machine that puts folds into sheet metal, when the little finger on his right hand made contact with one of the moving parts of the machine – following the accident at work, he was immediately rushed to hospital where part of his finger was amputated) Two workers hurt at Stockton Imperial Tankers site (two men were struck by a piece of lifting equipment as they worked – the pair were working in an inspection pit – they were driven to hospital by ambulance – conditions are not known) UPDATE now FATAL BURNS Worker dies two weeks after being burned at U.S. Steel’s Clairton plant (worker, 64, died Friday after being injured two weeks ago at the plant – he was burned in the quench tower, where water cools coke after it has been heated) CRANE FIRE Worker Burned During Crane Fire At Philadelphia Shipyard; 2nd Worker Trapped (one worker was burned and another was trapped following a crane fire at a shipyard at about 7:30 a.m. – a fire broke out in a goliath crane at the shipyard – one worker suffered severe burns and was transported to a burn unit in an unknown condition – a second worker, possibly the crane operator, was trapped and rescue crews were called to the scene to remove the worker) EXPLOSION Worker injured in chemical plant explosion (an explosion at a chemical plant has sent a worker to hospital with burns to his lower legs – fire crews arrived on the scene to find a man covered in a black substance after a 30-litre container exploded – worker was put through a decontamination station to remove the chemical before being rushed to hospital – fire crews were on the scene to ensure seven other employees at the east-end facility are safe, and a city transit bus was called in to give them shelter) ACID 2 Workers Burned in Acid Spill at Refinery in Martinez (two workers at a refinery are recovering at a hospital after being burned in an acid spill – the workers were splashed with sulfuric acid around 2:40 a.m. at the refinery where they were treated before being airlifted to a Medical Center – the employees were injured while working in one of the refinery’s gasoline production units – unit has been shut down) MINE FATALITY Rockfall kills a worker at a WA mine site (worker, 59, has died after a rockfall at a gold mine – operations have been stopped while the investigation is underway) UPDATE Heart attack killed Amazon worker, daughter says (the employee found dead earlier this week in the company’s parking lot suffered a heart attack, the woman’s 20-year-old daughter said – worker, 46, had just finished up her 10-hour shift as a packer at the distribution center – she was found more than seven hours after her shift ended lying between her car, which had a door open and was running, and another vehicle) FATAL EXPLOSION Worker killed in Pennsylvania gas well explosion (one worker is missing and presumed dead and another worker was hospitalized after a natural gas well exploded and caught fire – it has been burning since the explosion, and officials say it might take days to get the fire under control – explosion occurred at 6:45 am – state police have now set a half-mile perimeter around the site – officials are not sure what caused the explosions, and they say they will not know for sure until the fire is under control) AMMONIA EXPLOSION South Korea dairy plant explosion kills one, injures three (an explosion in an ammonia tank pipeline at a dairy and ice cream production and storage plant resulted in one death and three injuries -the explosion caused at least 1.5 tons of ammonia be released into the environment – a 55-year-old worker was crushed to death when the explosion caused a building to collapse – he was found five hours after the explosion took place, with the search being delayed by smoke and concerns of secondary explosions – three other workers near the tank have been evacuated to a hospital – some suffered broken limbs although doctors claimed the injuries were not life threatening – ammonia was being used as a refrigerant for ice cream and other food products at the plant) UPDATE Cargill into the plant) CONSTRUCTION WORKZONE IDOT worker killed as snow leads to accidents (a DOT worker, 49, died in a crash – he was killed when he was struck by a car shortly after 9:30 a.m. – he was driving a snowplow and had gotten out of the truck and was struck by a car) FATAL FALL from ROOF Worker falls to death from high-rise in Sharjah (Police are investigating two fall accidents that occurred over the weekend, resulting in the death of one worker while injuring another – first accident, worker 45, fell to his death from a high-rise building – in the second accident, worker 49, fell from a high- rise building and sustained serious injuries) AUGER West Fargo worker badly hurt in auger accident (a worker, 34, severely injured his right arm and hand while using an auger to test soil at a construction site – about 4 p.m. he was working in an area where several new apartment buildings are being constructed – he was testing soil – investigators believe his clothing may have caught on the auger and pulled him into the machine – co-workers freed him before medics arrived and took him by ambulance to a Hospital) FALL PROTECTION SAVES MORE LIVES! Scaffolding Accident Sends 4 Workers To Hospital, Scene Of Daring Rescue (four workers were cleaning and inspecting the bridges along the New River below I-95 were on a suspended scaffolding when it suddenly gave way – three of the workers were left dangling in the air while a fourth worker plummeted to the ground and landed in the pile of broken scaffolding – the worker who fell to the ground was rushed to a Medical Center while rescue crews safely removed two of the hanging workers – a fourth worker was suspended for more than 90 minutes while strapped into his safety harness) 2 workers injured in construction accident at FPL plant (workers, 32 and 52, were working on a large steel frame when it collapsed – one was behind the steel frame working from the ground while the other was on a ladder in the front when it collapsed – both men were wearing hardhats at the time) CRANE Worker’s foot crushed at Scarborough construction site (a construction worker was seriously hurt after a five-tonne panel fell onto his foot at a construction site at about 2:15 p.m. – the plate fell from a crane, landing on the injured worker’s foot, crushing his foot and causing severe injuries – his foot and lower leg injuries were considered serious but not life-threatening) FATAL HOTWORK Worker dies, 151 patients evacuated in hospital fire (a construction worker, 35, died while 151 patients were evacuated when fire broke out at a construction site next to a Hospital – the fire was believed to have been sparked by welding at the lower ground floor of a new wing under construction – he was believed to have suffocated from smoke inhalation) WORKZONE FATALITY VDOT contract worker killed when trucks crash in Ashburn (a DOT contract truck driver working to clear snowy roads has died after he was struck by another DOT truck – the crash occurred just before 6 a.m. – the driver pulled off the road and was standing behind his truck when he was hit by another dump truck – the contract worker was taken to the hospital, where he died – the other driver was not injured) CRUSHING FATALITY Electrical worker killed by falling gear (an employee, 40, of an electrical contractor working at an elementary school died after a piece of electrical gear fell on him – he died of injuries sustained while working at the Elementary School) Miscellaneous OLYMPIC ACCIDENT Worker hit by bobsleigh in stable condition (an ice worker who was struck by a bobsleigh is in a stable condition in a hospital – officials are still investigating how the accident happened before a training session – worker has undergone surgery on two broken legs – the worker was struck by a forerunning bobsleigh, which is used before training and competition sessions to test track conditions) Wis. bowling alley accident averted as worker saves boy (a bowling alley employee’s quick action saved a toddler from what could have been serious injury after he was pulled into a ball return machine – a boy had walked down a bowling lane and had gotten so far that a mechanized arm deployed – he had passed a laser that triggers it – and dragged the boy and knocked-down bowling pins into a pit) HOTWORK FIRE Lancaster County man burned in workshop fire (worker is recovering from burns he suffered in a fire – the fire started just before 12:30 p.m. at a repair shop – a man was inside the repair shop welding, when a spark flew into an open container of gasoline – he was able to get out of the building and call 911, but he suffered second and third degree burns to his forehead and the top of this head) |
