INDUSTRIAL CRANE Worker crushed at Hampshire waste disposal centre (a worker, 44, has been crushed at a waste disposal centre when he became trapped against an overhead gantry on a hydraulic platform – he was flown by air ambulance to a Hospital with suspected fractures to his spine and neck – his condition is stable – he was working on a cherry picker inside a metal building when he appears to have been crushed between the cage and an overhead gantry) FIRE FATALITIES Pakistan factory fires kill over 300 workers (at least 289 workers have died from a fire that erupted at a garment factory – it is possible more bodies could yet be found and that some of the critically injured may not survive – most of the dead were asphyxiated by smoke because they could not escape the fire – three of the building’s four exits were locked, supposedly to prevent theft – the windows were grated, and the factory had no proper fire exits, contrary to regulations – the few it did have were clogged with supplies and garments – earlier Tuesday about 25 workers were killed when a fire erupted at a shoe factory – the factory, which was illegally built in a residential neighborhood, lacked proper exits and fire-fighting equipment) EXPLOSION 1 worker injured in explosion at Va. plant (a worker is recovering from injuries suffered in an explosion at a manufacturing plant – the worker suffered burns on his hands, face and chest and was transported to a hospital – the damage was limited to an industrial-type oven that exploded – cause of the explosion hasn’t been determined) FATAL FALL Worker Who Died At Wichita Plant Identified (a worker, 26, suffered a fatal fall – he worked at the aircraft plant for more than five years – he suffered a fractured skull when he fell about 12 feet onto concrete – he later died at a Medical Center) CONFINED SPACE FLASH FIRE WORKER BURNED AT KALEEN FUEL STATION (a man, in his 40s, is in a hospital with serious burns after a workplace accident at a fuel station – he was carrying out contract work at the service station – he was carrying out repair work underground when a fiberglass fuel tank caught fire about 12:30pm – he was taken to a Hospital with serious burns to his arms and legs, and possible airway burns – he is in a serious but stable condition) FATALITY Sheboygan man dead after industrial accident in Cedar Grove (a worker, 38, has died after an industrial accident due to head injuries – the accident happened at about 7:10 a.m. – no other details) MINE EXPLOSION Two killed in blast at Harmony’s Joel mine (two contract workers had been killed in an underground explosion at a mine – two other workers were injured in the accident and were both in a stable condition) MINE FATALITY Miner killed in Shoal Creek Mine accident identified (a miner, 28, died at a mine while workers were moving a portion of longwall equipment – he was given CPR during transport from underground to the surface but was pronounced dead after being brought out of the mine) HOTWORK FLASH FIRE in TANKER Worker injured in shop explosion (a man received burns to his face and nose, as well as inhalation injuries, after an explosion – he was welding on a tanker trailer used to transport crude oil at the facility just before 3 p.m. – preliminary reports say they were doing some welding on the truck, and they must have hit a pocket of gas that caused the explosion – there were no flames when fire crews arrived on scene, but there was smoke coming from the top of a manhole on the tanker trailer – the explosion burned a hole into the roof of the facility) FLASH FIRE Generator explosion kills man, injures three (one man was killed and three injured after a power generator exploded – the generator burst into flames at around 2 p.m. as a worker was turning the appliance on before a scheduled power cut) AMMONIA FATALITY Winery worker dies after ammonia exposure (a worker at a winery has died after being exposed to ammonia – one of the workers accidentally opened a wrong valve and released ammonia into a confined area – the man was one of six workers exposed – the other workers tried to rescue the man but were unable to get to him because of the fumes – he died at the scene – the other employees were treated and released) EXPLOSION @ POWER PLANT Seven injured in Nuon power plant incident (it is still unclear what caused the explosion at a power plant which injured seven – three of the seven injured were rushed to hospital for treatment – the others were admitted for observation – the explosion followed by a number of smaller blasts, may have been caused when a high voltage sub-station was closed down ahead of painting work) FATAL EXPLOSION @ SOLVENT PLANT Five killed in Punjab factory blast (at least five workers of a private factory were killed following an explosion in the solvent plant of the unit – fifteen other workers of the factory were seriously injured in the blast – the cause of the explosion was being investigated) CONSTRUCTION WORKZONE FATALITY Name of Worker Killed on I-90 Released (a worker, 63, was killed on I-90 – the accident happened shortly after 9 a.m. when two vehicles collided then one spun out and hit the worker – he had been putting up tarps for structural painting and was rushed to an Emergency Care Center where he died a short time later) UPDATE now a FATAL FALL Worker who fell from MacKay bridge dies of injuries (a man who fell late last month while working on a bridge has died – the victim was drilling on Aug. 30 to remove pieces of a concrete wall when he fell about 5 metres to the pavement – it was reported that he suffered head injuries – officials haven’t said whether the man was wearing safety equipment) CONSTRUCTION ELEVATOR FATALITIES 19 die after lift plunges 34 floors of building (nineteen workers died after a lift plunged more than 100 metres from the 34th floor of a residential tower under construction – the external lift, designed to carry up to 24 people, was carrying about 20 workers when it started to fall – four men and two women fell out of the lift around the 10th floor – the remainder hit the ground – there were no reports of any survivors – the accident was caused by a broken cable and that the dead were all decorators working on the building) FATAL FALL Construction worker falls to death (a construction worker, 22, died after falling from a building – while working on the fourth floor of a building under construction, he lost his balance and fell at around 9 am) ROOF COLLAPSE Construction worker killed in Fort Greene roof collapse (the Department of Buildings is investigating the cause of a tragic roof collapse that claimed the life of a construction worker around 9:13 a.m. – after a delivery of heavy materials, including concrete blocks, the roof of the building collapsed – five workers were on the roof at the time – two of them fell to the building’s basement when it collapsed – a worker, 67, was transported to a Hospital, where he was pronounced dead – another construction worker was rushed to the hospital where he remains in critical condition) SCAFFOLDING into POWERLINE Henrico construction worker badly injured in electrical accident (a construction worker was badly injured when he came in contact with a powerful electrical line – the victim, who is in his mid 20s, was in critical condition when he was taken to a Medical Center – the construction worker was moving a piece of scaffolding and came in contact with a power line while at a job site – the power line was transmitting 19,900 volts of electricity) BACKHOE FATALITY Backhoe Accident Victim ID’d as North Iowa Man ( worker, 31, died in a backhoe accident – he was operating the backhoe along a road that’s under construction when it tipped over in a ditch – he was trapped beneath it – construction workers were trying to help him when emergency crews arrived, but he died at the scene) CRANE and FIRE Worker jumps from the burning bucket of a crane (a construction worker, 29, suffered minor injuries and was taken to a hospital after he jumped from the burning bucket of a crane – the worker was in the bucket of a boom crane with a saw cutting a concrete electric pole – he was up in the bucket about 16 feet, removing the poll in sections, and the saw ran out of gas – when it was being refilled, some of the fuel fell into the bucket and ignited as the sawing resumed – the worker jumped from the bucket to escape the flames – the worker was taken to hospital with a broken wrist and other non-life-threatening injuries) FORKLIFT FATALITY Industrial accident near Bolton leaves one man dead (an industrial accident at a construction site has left a 62-year-old man dead – the man was killed when the forklift he was working on tipped over) MISCELLANEOUS FALL from TREE Worker hurt in fall from tree (a worker fell out of a tree – he was performing tree surgery work on the elm, which was affected by last weekend’s fierce winds, when he fell about 5m to the ground – it is understood the man was wearing a helmet and harness at the time of the accident – it was unclear how he fell) ELECTRICAL Teen burned by live power lines (a teenage fruit picker has been badly burned after accidentally touching an 11,000-volt power line – the 17-year-old was in a moderate to severe condition after suffering electrical burns to his body – he had been trimming trees while working on a fruit-picking machine when he unintentionally touched a 7.4-metre power line above him) DUST EXPLOSION Dust explosion injures 2 workers in Phoenix (two workers are being treated for second- and third-degree burns after a dust explosion at a design business – the workers were in the attic and the roof of the building of a door manufacturing company when the explosion occurred – the workers were cleaning up years’ worth of old dust – somehow the dust became an ignition source and all that sawdust in the air exploded – after the explosion, the workers fell through the roof into an old office – a third worker was also injured, but he refused medical treatment) HOTWORK 1 hospitalized after fire at Planet Hollywood (a fire in a trash chute in the north hotel tower was reported at about 10:11 a.m. – welding was being done in the area – guests on floors five and six were evacuated because of smoke – one person, a woman in her 60s, was taken to the hospital – no information is available about her condition) HOTWORK Flames damage business in W.G (a two-alarm fire destroyed the warehouse building and an attached large two- bay garage around 1:53 p.m. – the fire started when a worker was using a cutting torch in the open garage – a piece of metal had dropped from the vehicle and caused him to drop the torch, and that started the fire around the base of where he was working – the state fire marshal was called in for the investigation and the preliminary report is consistent with the fire having been started by a cutting torch in that area – there were multiple explosions from mostly tires and possibly smaller gas cans – within five minutes, the fire had spread into the warehouse – the warehouse was a total loss) HOTWORK Official: Worker’s torch sparks South Shore Mall fire (a demolition crew was using a torch to remove plumbing pipes from the site of the old store when the wall on the other side of the pipes caught fire – the fire forced officials to evacuate the shopping center – workers and shoppers from the 86 stores at the mall were evacuated shortly after 10:30 a.m., when a fire broke out in an area adjacent to a demolished store – there were no injuries) AMMONIA Four Amaltal Columbia crew hospitalised (two more people have been hospitalized after suffering gas poisoning while removing frozen fish from the stricken ship in port – two crew members of the boat, which caught fire at sea, suffered suspected ammonia poisoning – they had not been wearing respirators while taking the fish out of a part of the hull unaffected by the blaze – hours later, two more crew had to be taken to hospital, this time for suspected carbon monoxide poisoning – the carbon monoxide pockets in the hull were likely to be a result of the fire) |
