RADIATION Radiation-Exposed Workers To Be Treated At Chiba Hospital (three workers who were exposed to high-level radiation at a crippled nuclear power plant are scheduled to undergo specialized evaluation – the three workers were exposed to radiation amounting to 173 to 180 millisieverts while laying cable underground at the nuclear plant{apos}s No. 3 reactor, and two of them were taken to a Hospital due to possible radiation burns to their feet – the two were not wearing rubber boots as they stood in water that contained radioactive materials 10,000 times the normal level – the electrical engineering firm which employs the men, said its workers were not required to wear rubber boots as its safety manuals did not assume a scenario where its employees carry out work standing in water at a nuclear power plant)
MINING AMPUTATION Miner lost foot in accident; probe continues (a mine worker, 27, had one foot severed by equipment he was trying to fix at the underground coal mine – he was flown to a hospital and continues to be listed in fair condition – he lost one foot in the accident and the other foot was severely damaged – he is a longwall maintenance foreman and was repairing a chain conveyor on the longwall mining machine when the accident occurred at 6:10 a.m. – the chain conveyor had become hung up by a piece of metal – he and other miners were working to clear the obstruction when tension in the chain conveyor released, catching him when the equipment moved)
FATAL FALL Sewer facility employee falls more than 50 feet to his death (a man, 34, was killed after reportedly falling 50 to 60 feet off some scaffolding at about 8:30 a.m. – workers heard some noise and they{apos}ve heard some things, but there may not be an actual witness – investigators are not sure if the man was wearing any safety equipment at the time of the fall)
CONFINED SPACE FATALITY Three killed in an accident at Emami plant (three people were killed in an accident at a Biotech factory – three labourers slipped into a well where waste materials were accumulated – the workers were trying to clean it and were trying to shift those wastes manually – since it was chemical factory they were exposed to some poisonous gas – two were killed on the spot)
MINE FATALITIES Four miners die at Zambia{apos}s Vedanta unit, Konkola (four miners died at a new concentrator expansion project following a fall of ground – the expansion project involved contract workers engaged in excavation for civil construction)
REFINERY FIRE Fire near Kurnell refinery contained (a factory fire has set thousands of litres of hydrogen peroxide alight – it prompted the evacuation of residents within 800 metres with fears the fire could spread – firefighters had the blaze under control in about three hours – no word on cause)
EXPLOSION Plant Explosion Shoots Storage Tanks High in Sky (an explosion at a gas disposal plant – a pump station caught fire around 9:30 a.m., spreading the fire and causing two storage tanks, holding a brine mix, to shoot some 300 feet in the air – a nearby neighbor said one storage tank crashed through his father{apos}s garage, which sits next store to the plant, while the other tank landed in the parking lot – it took about two hours to put the flames out)

TRENCH FATALITY Worker trapped in trench dies (a construction worker died after being trapped in a trench – he suffered fatal “compression injuries” when about a ton of heavy, wet clay fell on him – about 75 rescuers and a dog were involved in the rescue attempt for about two and a half hours – when they reached the man, medics were able to use an EKG, which showed no signs of life – a crew was working outside a home when dirt fell in the trench about 5 p.m.)
TIP TRUCK Worker injured in Airport Link Tunnel accident (a 61-year-old traffic controller crushed by a tip truck at a construction site is recovering in a hospital – the man received a major fracture to his left femur and major bruising to his pelvic and hip area – he was transported in a stable condition – the man had his back to the tip truck at the time and the driver did not see he was standing there)
LANDSLIDE FATALITIES Four Construction Workers Killed in Landslides in Northeast India (four construction workers are dead after a landslide – it happened when loose soil from the hills came down, burying all of the workers beneath it – a wall of a multi-storied residential apartment building was being constructed)
EXPLODING TIRE 3 Carmel highway workers hurt when truck tire explodes in freak accident (three Highway Department workers were taken to a Hospital for treatment of non-life threatening injuries in a freak accident involving a town truck tire that exploded – a large chunk of asphalt became wedged between the two right-rear tires of a town truck around 10 a.m. – the workers were trying to remove the asphalt from between the two right-rear tires when one of the tires punctured then blew – the men were hit with debris in various parts of their bodies)

Police: Woman Bit Co-Worker{apos}s Finger Tip (authorities have arrested an employee who allegedly bit a co-worker{apos}s finger because she believed the other woman was seeing her husband – worker, 43, confronted the other woman in the parking lot of the store – the alleged victim told police she was leaving the store at the end of her shift at about 7 a.m. and the attacker threw a substance in her face that burned her eyes – she struggled with the attacker and then the attacker bit the tip off her right ring finger – she was arrested and charged with aggravated battery with great bodily harm causing permanent disfigurement)

Surgical Hospital Worker Found Dead of Apparent Inhaled Anesthetic Overdose (investigators await toxicology report but believe night-shift worker{apos}s death to be an accident – a part-time security and housekeeping worker, 29, was found dead at a surgical hospital from an apparent overdose of an unidentified inhalational anesthetic – a bottle of inhalational anesthesia was found next to his body when hospital workers went looking for him – he{apos}d been working an overnight shift for about a year)
UPDATE on FATAL EXPLOSION Fatal blast when worker uses lighter to peer into flammable drum (a worker, 33, died in a fiery explosion at a car dealership after he apparently used a cigarette lighter to illuminate the inside of a 55-gallon drum of flammable cleaning solvents – another worker suffered smoke inhalation – while speaking by cell phone with a chemical supplier, he ignited the lighter to check the level of auto cleaning solvent inside the drum – the barrel exploded and was propelled about 30 feet into the air before it struck the roof – investigators used video from a surveillance camera to determine what caused the explosion and fire)
HOTWORK FIRE Welding accident leads to fire in Rome automotive business (two mechanics were welding inside when some sparks flew and quickly grew into a fire – fire department was called and worked for more than an hour to douse the flames – the structure is a complete loss. No one was hurt, but two dogs are missing)
