Many facilities utilize golf carts as a means of transportation while traveling on-site. Some are used indoors as well, which, in my professional opinion, increases risks in their use. Unfortunately, many workplaces do not view the use of golf carts as a hazard, much less a serious hazard, and therefore, they fail to control the hazards these devices pose. I have seen my share of accidents and near misses with golf carts and UTVs. Here is a 2024 fatality involving a golf cart used at an agriculture nursery.
At 3:15 p.m. on May 15, 2024, Employee #1, 58, was verifying inventory at a worksite when she was struck by a golf cart driven by another employee.
The collision caused a rolling rack to fall, and Employee #1 was pinned underneath it.
The employee sustained bruises to the shoulder, a head contusion, and other injuries resulting in a fatality.
Emergency services responded, but the employee was pronounced dead at the scene.
