A mentor of mine had this sign in his office, and every time I complained about a lack of commitment to safety, he would either hand me a Job Application to McDonald’s or point to this sign. If we think about it, it fits so many management teams today. I look back on my former management teams in my early days and came to realize, about 4 years into my consulting run, just how good I had it. However, over my 20+ years of consulting across numerous industries and countries, I became saddened at how poorly senior management within a facility and an entire corporation was doing when it came to managing safety.
Many of these organizations engaged SAFTENG to do what I had done within my facilities when I worked in the petrochemical industries. But I had serious support, and management at my facilities truly wanted the best for their people, and that approach led with their safety and health. We did not have to plaster the workplace with banners and slogans (although I was conditioned to do this back then; however, 3 of my four bosses forbid me from doing so), as the workers knew safety mattered through our actions and discussions.
