One hurt in industrial accident at Braddock steel works (one worker was flown by medical helicopter from the scene of an industrial accident at 1:30 a.m. – a statement from the company described the incident as “a small localized fire” – the injured man was flown to a hospital, where he was evaluated and released)
FOUNDRY FATALITY Worker killed at Kennedy Valve (a worker was killed at the factory – the person who was killed had worked at the factory for a few years – the worker was fatally injured while making repairs to a hydraulic tabletop in the mold department – the factory has been the site of other fatal workplace accidents in recent years – 2004 a worker, 45, was killed in an industrial accident at the plant – nine years earlier a worker was killed in an explosion at the foundry)
PAYLOADER FATALITY Cops probe worker’s death in Coram industrial accident (worker was operating a payloader at 3:19 p.m. when a co-worker told him he had hit another employee – worker stopped the vehicle and called 911 – worker, 25, was pronounced dead at the scene)
STEEL MILL FATALITY Furnace fall in Baosteel kills 2, injures 13 (two people were killed and 13 injured, including one man who remains in critical condition with third-degree burns on 99 percent of his body, after molten iron spilled from a refining furnace at a steel plant – the accident happened around 9:10 am when workers were clearing molten slag from the furnace – a hook lifting the furnace failed, toppling the 270-ton structure – in addition to the worker in critical condition, six others were seriously burnt, and two of them with burns on 8 percent of their bodies)
UPDATE on MINE FATALITY Body of Worker in W.Va. Coal Slurry Pond Recovered (the body of a worker, 58, missing since Nov. 30 in a West Virginia coal slurry pond has been recovered – the body of the worker was found inside the cab of the bulldozer he was driving when an embankment collapsed – the dozer was swept into the massive Robinson Run prep plant impoundment along with two pickups and other men who survived – he was a 37-year employee)
ELECTROCUTION w/ LADDER Worker dies in accidental electrocution (police and firefighters are investigating a fatal and reportedly accidental electrocution – a worker touched a ladder linked to overhead electrical wires at 12:32 p.m.)
FALL and HIGH ANGLE RESCUE Worker in good condition after fall from Hanover wind turbine (a construction worker, 53, who fell 24 feet had to be carefully lowered through a series of hatchways inside a 210-foot wind turbine before being rushed to the hospital – he was “conscious and stable” when rescue crews arrived on the scene around 9:20 a.m. and listed in good condition – it took crews over an hour to get the man out of the tower so he could be taken to the hospital – the man was secured in a basket and carefully lowered vertically through a series of hatchways in platforms between his position and the entrance at the bottom of the tower)
HOTWORK Fire destroys Fremont machinery shop building (the building that housed a machinery shop will have to be demolished after a four-alarm fire – fire investigators combed through the debris trying to determine exactly how it started – a molten piece of material that was a product of a grinding operation getting into a part of the exhaust system igniting a fire in the exhaust system – that fire then spread through the shop’s ventilation system and to its roof – no one was injured – many of the more than 50 workers who were looking forward to the holidays wonder when they might get back to work)
LOTO – AUGER Man injured when leg gets stuck in auger at grain elevator in southeast Missouri (an investigation continues after a worker was injured at a grain elevator at around 11 a.m. – an employee was cleaning the floor and got his leg stuck in an auger – the man was flown by helicopter to a hospital – it took about 17 people to help free the man from the auger)
GAS PIPELINE EXPLOSION Investigators: Corroded Pipe Linked to Sissonville Explosion (a federal investigator says a ruptured natural gas pipe in West Virginia had areas consistent with external corrosion – the pipe will undergo further analysis at an NTSB lab – the NTSB is looking into the cause of the explosion which destroyed four homes and charred a large swath of Interstate 77 – there were no serious injuries – investigators have said alarms didn’t sound at the control room during the explosion)
HOTWORK Fire causes $75,000 damage at auto repair business (a fire caused more than $75,000 damage to an auto repair shop around 10:30 a.m. – workers saw smoke and flames coming from the basement – no one was injured – the fire started in an oil-change pit beneath a repair shop bay where welding work was being done – investigators from theFire Marshal’s office believe the welding residue fell into the pit and ignited combustibles stored below)
FIRE Processing Fire at Synlait Milk Dunsandel Plant (a milk nutrition company had a processing fire at 6:45am – the fire was contained within a small section of its number one spray drier, and was caused by a faulty valve directing too much hot air to that part of the plant – minor damage was suffered and the affected spray drier is now fully operational after 48 hours of remedial work – there were no injuries)

PARKING GARAGE COLLAPSE Construction accident at hospital sends worker to ER (a construction accident at a hospital in sent a worker to the emergency room – worker was injured while working in a parking garage under construction at the hospital – he reportedly suffered injuries to the leg or foot when a structure in the garage collapsed)
UNLOADING STEEL BEAM Construction accident at University of Utah injures two (two construction workers were injured after a large beam they were helping unload fell out of a truck, pinning one man to the ground – the beam fell from a truck while workers were trying to lift it out – as it fell, it struck one worker and landed on a second worker, who was pinned until three other construction workers lifted the beam off of him – the two workers, both in their 20s, were transported to the hospital with serious injuries – the worker who was pinned suffered hip injuries and the other worker suffered injuries to his leg – a third worker who was on the beam when it fell also was injured – he was treated and released at the scene)
GUARDING Man in critical condition after cement mixer accident (a construction worker, 47, was clinging to life after a cement mixer snagged his sweater and pulled him inside – he was rushed to hospital in critical condition around 8:30 a.m.)
FATAL FALL Man falls to death at RAK construction site (a worker died after falling off a building under construction – rescuers found the man, in his 40s, dead at the site and police said he had likely lost his balance during work)
FALL into ELEVATOR SHAFT Worker injured at construction site of new Wishard Hospital (a construction worker was sent to the hospital after a construction site accident – an elevator mechanic was climbing from the first floor level down into the bottom of an elevator shaft when he slipped – he fell about six feet and landed on top of a coworker – the mechanic was able to climb out of the shaft using a ladder, but emergency personnel had to call in the rope rescue team to get the other worker out – that worker was transported to the hospital complaining of rib and back pain)
Worker pinned under rolling machine (a construction worker airlifted to a Hospital after he was pinned by a piece of construction equipment at about 11:30 a.m. – the worker was thrown out of a piece of equipment when it tilted, pinning him underneath a roller painting machine – the extent of his injuries wasn’t immediately released)
HOTWORK Welding sparks started big wildfire in Washington (an August wildfire that destroyed 61 homes and cost $11.1 million to suppress was likely caused by sparks from welding or cutting work on a bridge project – the agency released the results of its investigation into the Taylor Bridge Fire that blackened 36 square miles – the fire started Aug. 13 as a contractor and subcontractor were working on a Transportation Department project on the Highway 10 Bridge – investigators found the fire started about 30 feet from where one worker was cutting rebar with a power saw on the bridge deck, while a second worker was welding under the bridge – the work was taking place while industrial activity was supposed to be shut down because of the high fire danger in the area)
CRANE FATALITY Offshore crane collapses, sinking boat with 26 people (three construction workers were killed and 11 others missing when a barge laden with a crane capsized off South Korea’s southeast coast – the 2,600-ton barge sank at around 7 p.m. in waters off the industrial city of Ulsan after the 80-meter crane collapsed – so far, 12 people have been rescued with three others confirmed dead – search and rescue operations were under way for the 11 missing workers – the accident occurred during the construction of a new port facility – the crane appears to have broken due to strong winds, though they noted a thorough investigation was needed to identify the exact cause of the accident)
CRANE Accident cuts power to Rama III (a crane dragged down 28 electricity poles – around 7am, the boom of a crane being driven from a construction site got caught in the power lines, bringing down the poles, causing damage to seven cars and one house as well as injuring six people – all of the injured were rushed to hospital and are safe – crane driver, 55, has been detained by the police – an initial investigation revealed that the crane was parked on the level around one metre above the ground but it slipped down while the attached boom was still in an upright position) |
