With all the noise in safety these days, I find it refreshing to just focus on the fundamentals and have management set targets on these fundamentals. For example, take a random safety walk on Monday and focus on Container Labeling. Count all the containers evaluated, count all the containers that were NOT labeled in any way, and count all the containers that were labeled incorrectly. Devise a ratio of pass/fail. Compare that to the management target percentage. Then management can visually see the deficiencies and how far off the actual performance is on something as fundamental as “workplace container labeling”. I mean, HAZCOM has been around longer than most of us have been in this profession, so what would you accept as a passing score on a single 1-hr walk-through? 100%, 90%, 80%, 70%? We can do this with ALL of our core/fundamental programs/practices. LOTO procedures, PRCS labeling, respirators stored properly, etc. We all know the things we see every day as we walk through our facilities; many of these items drive us crazy. If we can not do the fundamentals well, we certainly should not be dabbling in all these fancy distractions available to us!!! But this exercise STARTS with management setting their expectations BEFORE we begin the “safety walk”. Then they can see the fruits of their labor in the form of fundamental safety. They may be surprised at what they see and how the facility is faring in the most basic safety requirements.
