Sizing my Boilers PSV Vent Line (it MATTERS!)

In the world of boiler PSV design, the “length” of a vent line is less about a specific length in feet and more about BACKPRESSURE. According to ASME Section I (Power Boilers) and Section IV (Heating Boilers), the moment you add a vent line to a Pressure Safety Valve (PSV), you are introducing flow resistance. Here is the breakdown of when “standard” sizing is no longer sufficient.

The “Short and Direct” Rule

Generally, a vent line can run without complex engineering calculations only if it meets these three criteria:

  •     The 1:1 Size Rule: The vent pipe diameter must be at least equal to the valve outlet’s nominal size.
  •     Minimal Elbows: It should be as short and straight as possible (typically interpreted as one or two long-radius elbows max).
  •     Atmospheric Discharge: It must vent to a safe location with no existing pressure (backpressure).

You move into “special sizing” needs (detailed pressure drop calculations) if any of the following occur:

  • Length exceeds 10–20 feet: While there is no hard “cut-off” in the code, once you exceed a short run, the friction loss can create built-up backpressure.
  • Multiple Elbows: Every 90° elbow adds “equivalent length” to the pipe. If you have three or more elbows, you almost certainly need to increase the pipe size.
  • Backpressure Limits: For a standard (non-bellows) safety valve, the built-up backpressure should typically not exceed 10% of the set pressure. If the friction in your vent line exceeds this 10% limit, the valve may “chatter,” fail to reach full lift, or close prematurely.

If you must run a vent line beyond a few feet (e.g., through a roof), the standard practice is to increase the pipe size by one nominal size immediately after the PSV outlet.

Example: If your PSV has a 2" outlet, you should transition to a 2.5" or 3" vent pipe for the vertical run. This reduces the velocity and friction, ensuring backpressure stays within the 10% limit.

Even for “short” runs, ASME requires these features to avoid “special” mechanical issues:

  • Drip Pan Elbows: For steam boilers, the vent line should not be mechanically bolted to the PSV. A drip pan elbow allows the valve to expand and contract without stressing the pipe, and it collects condensate.
  • Supports: The vent line must be supported independently. The weight of the pipe should never rest on the safety valve body.
  • Drainage: The line must be pitched to drain, or include a “weep hole” at the lowest point, to prevent rainwater or condensate from pooling on the valve disk.

Bottom Line: If your vent line is longer than 6–10 feet or has more than two (2) elbows, you should perform a backpressure calculation to ensure it doesn’t exceed 10% of the set pressure. If it does, you must increase the pipe diameter!
