INDUSTRIAL

Beaumont worker loses leg in industrial accident (a man, 59, lost one leg and severely injured the other in an industrial accident – he was working with some large, heavy pieces of metal when one fell on his legs, crushing them – he was taken to a Hospital, but his condition was not immediately available)

PAPER MILL BURNS Accident at Tomahawk area mill burns worker (a worker was severely burned and was taken to a local hospital then flown to a University Hospital – officials have not released details of how the injury occurred)

LOTO Garbage truck accident severely injures Fla. man (a maintenance worker was severely injured while cleaning out a city garbage truck – the truck’s driver closed the vehicle’s rear hydraulic door without realizing that the worker was still standing by the door – the door closed on the worker’s upper body, causing severe trauma – the worker was hospitalized with life-threatening injuries)

FIXED BELT MANLIFT FATALITY Evansville man is killed in industrial accident at Purina (a worker, 43, was killed in an apparent industrial accident around 2 a.m. – one of his co-workers called 911 after discovering him unresponsive and entangled in a man-lift at the facility – the lift device as “a conveyor belt that is running vertical” – he was found suspended about 20 feet above the ground and was stuck between the lift and the wall – firefighters had to disassemble part of the lift to get him free)

UPDATE on HF FATALITY Samsung Apologizes For Worker Death Caused By Hydrofluoric Acid Leak (the company has apologized publicly for a workers death caused by a hydrofluoric acid leak at one of its factories – the accident occurred in January, and the gas leaked caused the death of one worker and the hospitalization of four other employees – according to an initial report workers covered the leak with a plastic bag for almost 14 hours – the leak was not reported to local authorities until a crew worked died from the deadly gas – seven workers have been arrested and are now being investigated for their part in the leak and subsequent cover up)

ELECTRICAL Worker on Tropicana property seriously injured from electrical shock (an explosion around 9:45 am left one worker with serious injuries – the worker was shocked and burned – he was flown to a Hospital – no word on what caused the explosion)

EXPLOSION @ Steel Plant At least 10 hurt in U.S. steel plant explosion (up to 10 workers were injured in an apparent gas explosion at the steel plant – gas ignited near a grinding machine shortly before 8 a.m. – three of the 10 workers were in critical condition after being flown by medical helicopters to area hospitals – at least one of them was burned and others may have suffered inhalation burns – seven of the workers were being treated for smoke inhalation at a Regional Medical Center – their conditions ranged from “stable to guarded” – three of the workers were released)

HOTWORK Worker Injured In Fire At Camanche Plant (one person was injured in a workplace explosion around 9:30 – there were no visible flames outside the building, but they found smoke inside – employees had already put out the fire using fire extinguishers – an employee was burned after using a grinding wheel too close to flammable liquids – that person suffered burns to his hand and head and went to get medical treatment in a private vehicle – damage to the building is minimal, but damage to the contents is estimated at $500)

EXPLOSION Four people injured in fire at Walkden industrial estate (homes were evacuated after a fire involving a diesel-powered pressure washer which left two men with serious facial burns – a pressure washer used to clean equipment at the plant burst into flames injuring a 31-year-old and another worker – fire investigators were working to determine the cause of the blast)

EXPLOSION w/ MAGNESIUM OXIDE Worker burned in fire at La Porte chemical plant (a worker at a chemical plant was burned in a fire caused by an explosion around 1 p.m. – emergency response team contained the fire, which was in the magnesium unit of the plant – Magnesium oxide caught fire after the small explosion – a contract employee was injured and was taken to a Hospital)

ELECTROCUTION Worker dies of electrocution at Kudankulam nuclear plant (a man working at a Nuclear Power died after he was electrocuted – he was working as a contract labourer – the accident occurred in an underground tunnel in the plant’s second unit during cabling work)

FATAL FALL from RIG Worker Killed After Fall from Oil Rig is Named (a worker, 60, died in a fall on a rig – he was working on the semi-submersible drilling unit tied alongside when the incident happened at around 6.50 a.m.)

WELDING GAS CYLINDER Tulsa Business Evacuated In Welding Tank Fire (an acetylene welding tank caught fire due to a loose fitting – hazardous materials crews evacuated all employees, removing the cylinder and putting out the fire – damage was confined to the welding tank, and no one was injured)

UPDATE on REFINERY FIRE Cause of third fire at Regina Co-op refinery faulty vent plug (a vent plug failed causing a fire damaging buildings and equipment at the refinery last month, the third significant fire at the refinery in the last year and a half – the latest fire started around midnight Feb. 11 when a carbon steel vent plug failed because of sulfidation, a type of chemical reaction – this led to extreme pressure and extremely high temperatures which caused the fire – the fire started around 12:20 am and extinguished by 1:00 am – fire was fought by the refinery’s fire crews with the Fire Department staged outside the facility)

EXPLOSION Explosions, Fire At Cary Paint Plant (an explosion and fire at a paint manufacturing plant injured three people around 1:30 p.m. – a second explosion occurred around 2:45 p.m. and the situation was getting worse inside – firefighters were trying to keep product tanks inside cool and keep the fire inside under control – after the latest blast, firefighters were pulled away from the building and went into a defensive position to keep the fire from spreading – a two block area was evacuated – three victims were initially taken to a Hospital but have now since been transferred – their conditions were not available)

FIRE Two injured in explosion at Cleckheaton mill on Monday night (investigation is underway following an explosion in a metal factory in which two people were injured – the blast occurred in the first floor of an extension building and injured two people – 13 members of staff were taken to hospital for precautionary check-ups – the cause of the blast is yet unknown and is under investigation – 10% damage to the building)

FIRE Fire at power plant after fuel spill (a fuel spill at a power station sparked a fire about 7.45pm – power station emergency crews responded to the fires caused by fuel spills on two levels of the plant – the fire was contained avoiding interruption to the power station’s operation – damage is estimated at $25,000)

AMMONIA Small Ammonia Leak at Americold Logistics in Fogelsville (workers contained a small ammonia leak before emergency responders arrived – a small ammonia leak in the dock area was reported – plant workers contained the leak before firefighters arrived)

CHLORINE Staff hospitalized after chlorine gas leak at Crown Perth (five staff members were taken to a hospital after a chlorine gas leak – two liquid chemicals had been mixed by contractors to produce the toxic gas underneath the main casino complex about 11:30 a.m. – no casino customers are believed to have been affected – the extent of their injuries is not yet known)

FATAL FALL Construction worker killed in accident in Sochi (eight workers fell from the seventh floor of an apartment building under construction and one of them was killed in the accident – accident occurred at 12:15 p.m. – one of the eight workers who fell off unsafe scaffolding, died – the seven others sustained injuries and they are in serious condition)

MANLIFT FATALITY Worker dies in freak accident at university (a university worker, 58, died after an accident where he was struck by a ‘cherry picker’ machine involved in construction work – he worked in the estates and maintenance section of the University – he died at the scene after he suffered head injuries at site works on the campus shortly before 5pm)

PIPE ACCIDENT Worker in good condition despite accident with 2,000 lb. pipe (a worker was hurt while installing a drainage pipe – he’s in good condition at a hospital – a 2,000 pound pipe fell on him)

TRENCH Department of Transportation employee taken to hospital after work-related accident (a Department of Transportation worker was taken to an area hospital as a precaution after a work-related accident – the worker was doing pipe repair work when dirt began to fall into the hole he was working in – other workers were able to help the man out of the hole)

Three killed in industrial accident at Jindal Power’s plant (at least three workers were killed and two others critically injured in an accident at a power plant – a few workers were engaged in boiler maintenance work – the deceased were 35, 30, 19 – no details of what happened)

TRENCH Trapped Workers Rescued, Recovering After Construction Accident (two men who were pinned beneath a large concrete slab following a construction accident – the men were trapped in a trench for almost two hours after a large concrete slab gave way, falling on their legs – the two construction workers were cutting a slab of concrete – they thought it was secured, but it was not – the slab fell from under them, and the men ended up falling with it and getting pinned)

FATAL FALL Worker Dies After Fall at Wheaton Construction Site (a worker died after falling at a construction site where a six-story, 232-unit residential apartment project is under construction – a dozen firefighters responded within five minutes of a 10:18 a.m. report of a person injured after a fall – the worker was pronounced dead at the scene – another construction worker at the scene said that high winds played a part in the fall)

HOTWORK Minimal damage to Target store as welder sets off small fire (about $5,000 damage was caused to the new store when a fire broke out while workers were doing renovations at 9: 22 a.m. – the fire was burning inside an empty space in an exterior wall near the top of the building – the fire was extinguished using the department’s ladder truck and some fortunate timing – fire investigators determined that the fire was caused by welding operations – there were no reported injuries)

CRANE Crane collapse in Alsea Bay topples new tower into water; no one hurt (a tower fell when a crane that was helping construct the project suddenly collapsed – there were no injuries and it was too early to know how long the accident will delay the project)

MISCELLANEOUS

WATER PARK Accident at Schlitterbahn leaves two workers hospitalized (two construction workers have been hospitalized following an accident at a water park – the two maintenance workers were injured in a workplace accident – full details were not immediately available but paramedics were called to the water park – authorities received reports that the workers had blunt force trauma to the head – one worker was airlifted to a Medical Center – the other was taken by ambulance to a Medical Center)

HOTWORK MAN INJURED IN FIRE (emergency responders took the man to the hospital around 11:30 – the fire started because someone was welding too close to flammable material – the building was destroyed in a matter of minutes – Fire Department reports nearly $300,000 in total damage)
