A lot of vital information is packed into a 10-minute presentation!
Dr. Pupulidy is a professor at the University of Alabama’s (UAB) Master of Engineering with a concentration in Advanced Safety and Engineering Management program. Which by the way I am proud to say is a “Partner in Safety” with SAFTENG; in fact, they use some SAFTENG HF pictures in their teachings. I also know of Dr. Pupulidy through my work with the U.S Chemical Safety Board (CSB). Dr. Pupulidy got his Master of Science degree in Human Factors and Systems Safety at Lund University in Sweden, under Professor Sidney Dekker. Google or search for the name Sidney Dekker within SAFTENG and you will see how that is relevant in the world of Human Factors!
In this TedTalk, Dr. Pupulidy is speaking to medical practitioners about human behavior, human errors, and safety – but it is 100% relevant to the industrial safety world we work in each and every day. What he says in 10 short minutes sums up the serious flaw that so many companies still make today in their efforts to improve the safety and health of their employees. Those of us who spent our careers in the process safety field are a bit further along in our understanding of “human factors”, as OSHA and EPA actually regulated that we study and consider human factors in our Process Hazard Analysis (PHA).
In my Social Media groups, I usually post several pictures and videos each month under the title “Human Factors 101” and these are pics and videos that I have taken along my travels. Elevator buttons, traffic signs, and EXIT signs are some of my favorite targets.
Take the time to hear Dr. Pupulidy and really listen to what he is saying about how we use HF in our safety efforts and more specifically how we manage HF in our accident investigations. I think he has a breakthrough moment in these 10 minutes for those who really want to listen to a true expert in Human Factors.
