Integrated Safety Management System Core Functions

This is a new take, from DOE, on the core fundamentals of an SMS.  We can see the core within this new model, now called an Integrated Safety Management System (ISMS).  The five (5) core ISMS functions provide the necessary structure for all work that could potentially affect workers, the public, and the environment.

  1. Define the scope of work
  2. Hazards associated with the work are IDENTIFIED, ANALYZED, and CATEGORIZED.
  3. Develop and implement hazard controls
  4. Perform work within controls
  5. Provide feedback and continuous improvement

Here is a breakdown of these core functions.  Don’t worry; this is just an advancement of the SMS models that have been used for the past 50 years.  We are still IDENTIFYING hazards, ANALYZING those hazards, ASSESSING the RISKs those hazards pose, and REDUCING the risks using the Hierarchy of Controls.
