In this picture from the Jack Rabbit, we can see the Liquid NH3 that has pooled under the container. This occurred under 95F temperature with a high wind speed, which blew the cloud away from the pool making the pool visible. The picture below was taken 10-seconds after the container was empty. Also, notice the impact that wind had on the “cloud” of NH3 vs. what it looked like with low wind speeds as shown in the videos.
In simple terms, what is happening is that the liquid release is happening at such a rate, it is able to absorb/remove the heat from the ground/concrete/asphalt/etc., which along with the ambient temperature is the heat source that is causing the ammonia to “boil off” (e.g. vaporize rapidly). Once the liquid has overtaken its heat source, the liquid will sit there as a “refrigerated liquid” and the vapor coming off the surface will cool and “re-condense” and settle back to the surface – thus we call this “Auto-Refrigeration”. Both Cl2 and Ammonia will behave in this manner.
