One of the most hazardous tasks that take place within a chemical process is the NON-Routine Opening of the process. And sadly, there are no RAGAGEPs or OSHA standards that establish minimum safeguards for such hazardous activities. Which I guess in some ways, is better as it has allowed the industry to establish some really nice safety practices for these activities. This presentation is one I use when teaching “Evacuation and Double Block and Bleed” practices.

This is how we managed our opening on NH3, Cl2, H2S, COCl2, HCN, Br, etc. The only things that would change would be the hose and scrubbing/destruction media/method.
