We have discussed the requirements for welder certification and their documentation, pressure and leak testing and its documentation, but the one area that I have not covered yet is the documentation of the Welding Inspector(s). As we have said, the certified (“coded”) welder makes the weld(s) and then BEFORE any testing, a certified welding inspector will perform an inspection of the welds based on the Welding Procedure Specification (WPS) plan for how many welds will be inspected and the manner in which they will be inspected. The person doing this CRITICAL inspection/examination MUST be qualified to do so. And of course in the world of process safety, we turn to a RAGAGEP to define this certification/qualification and incomes AWS QC1: 2016-AMD1Specification for AWS Certification of Welding Inspectors (Link is to a FREE copy). So what does a facility need to ask for when a contractor claims they have an in-house inspector?
