PIPELINE Drilling Worker Killed In Bradford County Accident (a drilling company worker, 42, was killed while clearing a a right of way for a natural gas pipeline – he was using a chainsaw to cut down a tree when the tree kicked back striking him and knocking him to the ground – coroner says he died from head injuries)
GARBAGE WORKER Hit & Run Sanitation worker killed in Kiryas Joel hit and run (a deadly hit and run claimed the life of a sanitation worker – “He crossed the street and got hit by the car” – the victim was pronounced dead at the scene – State Police are looking for a white mini van, possibly with front end damage, that was spotted leaving the scene shortly before noon)
CRUSHED FATALITY Man killed in Moses Lake industrial accident (a worker, 31, was killed in a work-related industrial accident at approximately 7:25 p.m. after a large piece of equipment fell and trapped the victim by his head – workers and medical staff were able to free the piece of equipment and the victim was transported to a Hospital where he was pronounced dead)
FATAL MINE EXPLOSION 17 killed in Yunnan mine explosion; 2 arrested (a planned detonation ignited trapped gas in a coal mine – the explosion killed 17 workers and has led to the arrest of two mine officials – the blast ignited unventilated flammable gas in a mine tunnel where 66 people were working – 16 miners were killed instantly and one died at a nearby hospital – six others were injured – no explanation has been given as to why workers were in the mine at the time of the detonation)
Workers at Indiana plant report breathing trouble (health officials are trying to determine what caused 32 workers at a warehouse and distribution center to complain about breathing problems – assistant fire chief says the department received a call shortly before 9 a.m. about a worker having difficulty breathing and chest pain – others began complaining about similar symptoms – by the time firefighters were done, 32 workers had been taken to area hospitals complaining of symptoms such as a runny nose, chest discomfort and cough – they were all taken to be evaluated and it is not believed any of the workers were seriously ill – an empty semi-trailer that had a red crushed pepper substance in is believed to be the cause)
FLASH FIRE Fire breaks out at US State Dept, 4 injured (a flash fire broke out at the US State Department’s headquarters injuring four construction workers, one of whom received “life-threatening” wounds – one of the four construction workers injured in the incident was in serious condition – two more of the injured workers were transported to the hospital with serious but not life-threatening injuries – the fourth worker sustained injuries after falling off a ladder – the workers were repairing air ducts in the building when the fire broke out – the blaze was put out by the workers before firefighters arrived)
REFINERY FIRE UPDATE: Motiva Port Arthur Expansion Had Small Fire (a small fire at a refinery caused no damage – the company expects the refinery’s new crude unit to return to normal operations “in an expeditious manner” – the fire was the result of a small pipe leak that broke out in the unit at 10 p.m. – it was quickly extinguished with no injuries, and the unit was safely shut down – the fire looks to have been the result of a structural problem as opposed to a process issue)
DUST COLLECTOR FIRE Employee burned after fire at Marion Co. plant (a fire at a plant has resulted in one person being burned – sources say the dust bin behind the flooring plant caught fire – one employee was burned and was receiving medical condition – fire department was able to put the fire out and business there resumed as usual shortly after)
CHLORINE Firefighters stop chlorine leak in Boring; no injuries (firefighters were able to stop a chlorine leak before it reached any waterways – no injuries were reported – firefighters were dispatched shortly before 9 a.m. to a nursery to investigate a leak in a 1,500-gallon tank used to clean water – the leak was stopped shortly before noon)

UPDATE on WORKZONE FATALITY Coroner: Death of highway worker found under dump truck accidental (a coroner has ruled that the death of a highway worker, 62, was accidental – he died of asphyxia Oct. 3 when he was accidentally backed over by a dump truck – nobody saw the accident, but his co-workers found him under the truck – he died at the scene – a screening of his blood showed only a prescription drug at what the coroner called “therapeutic levels” – he was working on a township highway department crew that was repairing culverts)
DOZER FATALITY Davenport construction worker dies in accident (a construction accident has taken a life of a worker, 56 – an employee of a paving company was grading dirt on a steep embankment with a bulldozer when the embankment gave way – the dozer rolled onto its side – he was trapped under the bulldozer and died at the scene)
FALL Construction worker injured in Markham (an air ambulance has been dispatched after a male construction worker fell in an industrial accident – the worker, reportedly in his 40s, was injured – no further details about the victim’s condition or the nature of the accident were immediately available)
ARC FLASH 2 construction workers injured in accident (two construction workers were injured in an accident at a car dealership – the two electrical workers were burned around 7:30 a.m., and were flown to a hospital by helicopter – the severity of their injuries is unknown, and their names have not been released)
ELECTRICAL Crossrail worker burned in ‘electrical explosion’ (a worker is being treated for burns after a suspected electrical explosion at a site at around 12.40 p.m. – the construction worker undertaking utility excavation was “struck a below ground electrical cable”)
HOTWORK Spark ignites part of Lambeau Field wall (a small section of the structure burned for about 45 minutes after sparks from a worker’s torch set some insulation on fire – one firefighter sustained a minor injury – damage was estimated at $5,000 – workers on the fourth floor had been cutting a piece of metal from the new part of the stadium to the existing building when sparks spread to some nearby insulation)
FIRE Construction worker injured in White Rock blaze ( a worker, 32, was taken to a hospital with a broken wrist and second-degree burns to 20 per cent of his body after jumping from the parapet of an under-construction home to escape flames – the fire broke out at about 9:30 a.m., as framers worked in the basement and the roofer was “torching” a rubber seal – the heat caused a propane tank inside the structure to blow)
HOTWORK Officials: Maintenance worker ignited fire in Naugatuck (a maintenance worker using a blow torch to melt glue off old bathroom tiles started the fire at the Apartments complex that displaced three families – the man, a subcontractor, was trying to remove the glue before retiling the upstairs bathroom of an apartment)
FALL Construction Worker Injured in Fall (a construction worker fell two stories while working on a home around 3:30 p.m. – workers on the scene said the man was standing on the roof above the front porch when he apparently fell – he was found lying near the foot of the ladder he had used, however, it is not clear what caused his fall – extent of his injuries are unknown)
FALL from SCAFFOLDING Two men injured in fall from scaffolding (two men were sent by STAR Flight to a Hospital shortly after 2:40 p.m. when they fell 20 – 25 feet off of scaffolding while working on an awning in an office complex – the workers were alert and conscious and didn’t appear to have serious injuries; however, you are not transported by STARFlight unless the injuries are serious – the workers were using a ladder atop scaffolding when the accident occurred – one of the construction workers suffered rib injuries and the other victim was not seriously injured but was allowed to ride with his co-worker aboard StarFlight as he was transported to the hospital)
MISCELLANEOUS
FATALITY Car repair worker crushed to death in accident (a worker, 32, is understood to have died at the scene of the incident at the Accident Repair Centre – two other people were also injured in the incident which involved a vehicle which was being worked on in the garage – the incident had occurred during the movement of a vehicle that was being worked on at the premises)
5 sent to hospital after jar containing mystery liquid breaks at Dallas Salvation Army (a worker was unloading a box when the glass jar broke at the Salvation Army – five people were transported to nearby hospitals after a jar containing an unknown liquid was dropped, releasing fumes – a worker was unloading a box when the glass jar broke – five people, including at least one customer and several employees, reported feeling ill after witnessing fumes rise up from the jar – all five people were taken to hospitals as a precaution) |
