Scales of SafetyAfter the month I have witnessed, this image came to me this weekend as I reflected on the state of safety in the USA.  I have mentioned before, has the compliance model done more harm than good?  I mean, OSHA has made a huge impact on workplace safety. Still, once a business achieves “compliance” (and very few achieve total compliance), we see a significant pushback regarding doing other matters to improve safety outside of the OSHA MINIMUMS!  I had a client who had a significant incident and had they utilized the IFC requirements, which were required in the state where the facility is located, the incident could have been avoided, or the consequence lessened considerably.  But as it were, our suggestion in the PHA to address a hazard not addressed by OSHA or EPA was balked at – closed the recommendation stating “not required.”  This is a company declaring they are world-class in safety.  Hence this came to mind:
