Do parents have safety metrics for their children’s safety? Do we put up banners to demonstrate the significance of our children’s safety?
I am betting not on both. It is not needed as we naturally VALUE the safety of our children. We may never have the same level of VALUE of safety towards other adults as we do for our own children, but remember, our children are not a safety “priority”, we VALUE their safety with every inch of our being. No need for banners or slogans… we just VALUE THEIR SAFETY.’
Safety must become a VALUE of the business rather than a metric or a priority – both change often- our VALUES do not. It is not easy to build this VALUE as we are changing core beliefs, one that not everyone may truly believe.
FIRST, we have to make them believers and we do that by the organization’s leaders CONSISTENTLY displaying that safety is part of ALL WE DO. It’s not an add-on, it’s just the way we think, behave, talk, etc. There will be setbacks, but with CONSISTENT and VISIBLE actions that can be seen and felt by the workforce, progress can be made.
If you would not want your child to do the task, then why would you want someone else’s child to do it?
