Does your workplace have a “Mikey”

1972 LittleMikey 533Whenever I think about Routine and Situational violations, my mind goes back to my childhood days when Life cereal came out. The commercial involved two older kids talking about the cereal, and neither wanted to try it.  And there sat little Mikey, so they pushed the bowl over to Mikey and said, “let’s get Mikey to try it.”

Hence, I ask, does your workplace have a Mikey?

You know, that worker who “gets things done” that others would not or would do the work – but take longer.  That one worker who gets a ton of passes for their unsafe behaviors is often regaled as the “go-to guy.”

All workplaces have a couple of Mikey’s, and their unsafe behaviors are talked about openly and proudly, often causing people to claim Mikey is crazy, with statements like “I would never do that sh_t”.  We have to stop celebrating the Mikey’s and stop turning a blind eye to their behaviors as there will always be some younger employee who seeks that attention and glory, which will cause them to perform amazingly dangerous stunts in the name of attention and being a glory hound.
