As we wrap up this year and prepare for 2023, hopefully, you started your health, safety, environmental, and sustainability planning process at least a month or two ago. If you didn’t, don’t panic…. Focus! Just because you are late to the game doesn’t mean you have to plan for less. Focus on incorporating multiple dimensions, and think of big-ticket initiatives over multiple years. A one-dimensional HSES plan is a recipe for stagnant or worsening performance. What is a one-dimensional HSES plan, you ask…
a great example from a recent discussion is expecting one initiative to be the proverbial “silver bullet”. So, here are some things to consider…
- Does your “health” plan include mental health as well as physical health, ergonomics and industrial hygiene initiatives?
- Does your “safety” plan focus on more than observing behaviors and coaching? Have you incorporated sound safety engineering concepts and principles?
- Does your “environmental” plan look beyond compliance or permit limitations? Think emerging technologies…
- Does your “sustainability“ plan center around being a good steward of ALL your resources? Not just what the investment community is focusing on at this moment.
Thinking one dimensionally in any part of HSES can and will lead to poor performance in every aspect of your business! Great leaders understand the correlation and build cultures around it. Remember the 6 P’s – Proper, Prior Planning Prevents Poor Performance.
As always, challenges, comments, and questions are welcomed. And if you need help, I’m here to serve.
