Safety Thought of the Week… Procedures are not the problem

Maybe I’m just old school, but is it just too much to ask for:

  1. a well-written safety procedure,
  2. one that is written and analyzed with a safety pro and the worker(s) who do the actual work,
  3. that management will fully support the procedures everyday-everytime, including on holidays that fall on a Sunday, and
  4. employees will follow procedures everyday-everytime, including on holidays that fall on a Sunday?

There is a reason why old-school safety has saved millions of lives in the last 70 years. And almost all of the tragedies I have investigated in my 30+ years centered around the lack of a procedure, a poorly written procedure, no training on the procedure, and/or lack of management support for the procedure.

It is a STARTING POINT!
